About Us Device Integration Research |
Device Integration ResearchSince the introduction of the personal computer, creating and sharing documents has been an essential component of office work. The Apple Macintosh and LaserWriter launched a revolution in desktop publishing. The Palm Pilot and it’s descendants ushered in an era of handheld computing and today many people keep their address books and calendars on devices in their pockets. The iPod has been wildly successful in making music and video portable. However, as in the early days of desktop publishing, documents still remain confined to the desktop. Though it is possible to create and edit documents on a palm-sized computer, it is difficult. Many eBooks and document readers, have been produced, but none have taken hold in the marketplace.
The Device Integration Research group was launched in April of 2005 with the idea that RII could explore novel combinations of sensors, displays and actuators to build handheld, document-centric devices. The DIR group has extensive electrical, mechanical and software prototyping capability to be able to explore interaction with a number of new devices, designed and built at RII. We have built high resolution displays using multiple projectors, rotating panoramic cameras, and several different handheld devices. We collaborate closely with the other groups at RII, several groups in Japan and many outside contractors.
